Twitter and food miles
The locavore is now tweeting away on twitter–just look for thelocavore. Food news in 140 characters or less.
Also: Just back from a fabulous week at MIT where I heard James E. McWilliams speak. He’s a professor from Texas State University who *hates* food miles because, he says, they distort the true ecological impact on our food. He makes his case in the New York Times.
He prefers life cycle analysis for evaluating the environmental cost of what we eat. I, however, am not so keen on LCA as I feel it paralyzes the consumer. After reading an LCA study of bread that concluded organic factory-made loaves were the most efficient, I was profoundly saddened. Who wants to eat bread made in a factory? Those cardboard loaves with little flavour, no crumb and a 6 month-away expiration date? There must be a better way to make ethical food choices…
I look forward to reading his forthcoming book that covers these topics.
